My First Academic Reference

Some of you on Twitter may have seen my tweet about being used as an academic resource in a friend’s assignment (which also happened to be the same assignment I was doing). We got our results back last night, and so the ban has been lifted on me publishing the first, in what I hope to be many, academic reference to my blog:

The below quote is copyrighted to Tom Saunders:

It is the values of society which impact the most on how technology and privacy move together. Increasingly, it appears that communities are placing less importance on privacy. The widespread usage of modern social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter has indicated that the ability for people to connect across the world is valued more highly than the ability to remain private. For many, this was a decision made from a context of limited knowledge about the consequences of using social networks. “most people don’t realise the consequences of that youtube rant, hilarious drunk photo or the stupid blog posts… even if you do delete the content, it’s still available from other sources” (Nichols, 2009)

P.S. Tom actually went really well in the assessment (congrats!) and I believe it was primarily due to this quote ;)

  1. its the technology that is enabling it and the user’s increased adoption of social media that is causing an erosion to privacy values. there’s a lot of young people out there that grew up in a social networking world – they don’t remember a time before that!

An area where technology and privacy is really being challenged is behavioral advertising. This is where the user’s behavior on a website & the website’s network results in different ads being served. The user’s data is anonymised via one way hashtag and uses cookies to track their repeat visits. Most user’s do not realise that they are being tracked, monitored and being advertised to according to their behaviour.

  2. I forgot about this… PMP, right? Good times.
