An open letter to Sydney – come to Awesome Soup!

Hi Sydney,

Thanks for the awesome weather today.

As you may know I am part of the board for Awesome Foundation Sydney. Every month we give away $1000 to people as a no strings attached cash grant for their awesome ideas.

If you’ve ever wondered why I give $1200 of my salary every year to awesome ideas, I’m giving you the opportunity to find out – as a part of Vivid Sydney, we are hosting our very first event called ‘Awesome Soup’ where we will be giving away a $5000 grant to the most awesome idea.

The event will be on Saturday, the 2nd of June  at the Museum of Contemporary Art and tickets are $30 (plus $2.15 booking fee). You can buy your tickets here: http://vividsydney.oztix.com.au/?Event=26240

The ticket gets you dinner, a vote to select the winner plus being around some awesome people on the night. The money from your ticket will go directly towards the $5000 grant we will be giving away – so you have a vested interest in the idea you choose! You can buy your tickets from the Vivid website.

The other way you can be involved is pitching for the $5000 – if you have an awesome idea that needs a financial boost, apply at http://www.bit.ly/awesomesoupapply by the 12th of May (we’ve extended the deadline by a week). You’ll  need answer some simple questions about what you would do with the cash. The more specific you can be the better. If you’re selected as one of our top applicants, you will need to pitch your idea to our totes awes audience on ‘Awesome Soup’ night on the 2nd of June.

Please buy a ticket, pitch for an idea or help spread the word! Also, each table at Awesome Soup will have ten seats, so drag another nine of your friends along and make it an awesome night out!

I really hope you can make it, and feel free to Tweet me if you have any questions!

Lots of love,

Jess xoxo

#ignitesydney presentation about @awesomefoundsyd

I presented at Ignite Sydney last night speaking about “Being Awesome” at The Awesome Foundation.

Presenting at Ignite is a bit of a challenge, they make the presenters stick to a rigid format of 20 slides, each of which changes automatically after 15 seconds, giving a guaranteed 5 minute presentation. It was a fantastic experience, and thankyou to everyone, especially Stephen Lead, for organising such a great event.

Video footage should be going up in the next few weeks (and I’ll update this post when they do) but in the meantime I’ve included my presentation (with speakers notes) and the video from the dress rehersal which was presented on the night after the jump.

$1000 in no strings attached cash… what are you doing that’s awesome?

What the hell is Awesome?

I’ve been a part of the Awesome Foundation Sydney for a few months now… and I always get asked two questions.

1) “What happens if you’re funding terrorism?”

2) “What exactly makes something awesome?”

Being Awesome at @awesomefoundsyd

This morning I discovered the wonderful news that I had been accepted as a micro-trustee and founding board member of the Sydney chapter of the Awesome Foundation. As clichéd as it sounds, it is so totally awesome.

What is the Awesome Foundation? It’s a group of 10 people in a city who want to fund stuff that’s just plain awesome with a no strings attached $1000 grant. The micro-trustees don’t want any sort of reimbursement, compensation or IP ownership around your idea – they just want to help you bring it to life. It originated in Boston in 2009, and has spread like wildfire across the world over the last two years.
